CHIBE hosts 2024 Behavioral Science and Health Symposium
The Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics (CHIBE) welcomed economists, clinicians, and academics from around the globe to Penn for a two-day symposium on behavioral science and health.
“I’ve come here for many years now, and every year I leave energized by the talks and the productive conversations,” symposium steering committee member and CHIBE affiliate Silvia Saccardo, PhD, said.
This year, the symposium featured two keynote speakers: Marcella Alsan, MD, MPH, PhD, Angelopoulos Professor of Public Policy at Harvard University; and Noah Goldstein, PhD, Ho-Su Wu Chair in Management, Psychology and Medicine at UCLA.
Dr. Alsan’s talk was on “Why Doesn’t the United States Have National Health Insurance? The Role of the American Medical Association.” See our Q&A with Dr. Alsan on this topic here.
Dr. Goldstein’s talk was on “Social Influences on Provider and Patient Behavior: Key Insights, Open Questions, and Wild Speculations.” Read our Q&A with Dr. Goldstein here.
Attendees heard lightening round talks on topics related to trust, emotion, bias, equity, power, and the patient experience. Find the full program here.
There was also a panel discussion on climate change, the environment, and behavior with CHIBE Associate Director Atheendar Venkataramani, MD, PhD, moderating the discussion.
The cocktail reception included behavioral economics-themed cocktails: the Nudge Manhattan and the Fresh Start Effect, named after Katy Milkman‘s research finding.
Thank you to the symposium steering committee members (Alison Buttenheim, PhD, MBA; Katy Milkman, PhD; Kevin Volpp, MD, PhD; Silvia Saccardo, PhD; John Beshears, PhD; Jeff Linder, MD, MPH, FACP; and Sally Sadoff, PhD;) for planning this 14th iteration of the symposium. We extend enormous gratitude to event organizers Samantha Fellman and Joelle Friedman, MPA, as well.
