Biography
Raina Merchant is the executive director of the Center for Health Care Transformation and Innovation. She is also the chief transformation officer and vice president at Penn Medicine and a professor of emergency medicine at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. She has secondary appointments in the Division of Internal Medicine, Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care, and Division of Health Policy.
Raina received her bachelor’s degree from Yale University, her medical degree from the University of Chicago, and her master’s in health policy research from the University of Pennsylvania. Her work focuses on the intersection of digital media and health.
Much of Raina’s research and operations work bridges new technologies in the fields of cardiovascular health, mental health, cancer care, disaster medicine, public health, health equity, and resuscitation science. She has been continuously funded by the NIH since 2011, and her work has been published in journals such as NEJM, JAMA, Circulation, and Health Affairs. Her work has been featured in Wired, the Economist, the Wall Street Journal, and other media outlets. Raina is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, a member of the editorial board of JAMA, and an Aspen Health Innovators Fellow. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation named Raina one of 10 investigators likely to have a significant impact on the future of health and health care in the United States.
