Dr. Mehta Awarded NIH Grant to Test Behavioral Economic Approaches for Colorectal Cancer Screening

CHIBE-affiliated faculty member Shivan Mehta, MD, MBA, has been awarded a 5-year grant totaling $3.25 million from the NIH’s National Cancer Institute to use behavioral economic approaches to increase population-based colorectal cancer screening. This 3-year trial will involve a multi-level intervention focused on clinicians and patients and will test different approaches for offering two types of screening: colonoscopy or fecal immunochemical testing (FIT). Today, most practices rely on primary care providers recommending colonoscopies to patients when they come into the office. Annals of Internal Medicine has selected a paper led by CHIBE Associate Director M. Kit Delgado, MD, MS, as one of its best articles published in 2021. The paper, “Comparative Effectiveness of an Automated Text Messaging Service for Monitoring COVID-19 at Home,” is the largest evaluation of a remote monitoring service for COVID in the United States, according to the authors. They found that enrollment in “COVID Watch” was associated with reduced mortality. The service offered twice-daily text message check-ins, as well as the ability to report worsening symptoms.
