Biography
Mitesh S. Patel, MD, MBA, is the Vice President of Clinical Transformation and National Lead for Behavioral Insights at Ascension Health. He is also the Ralph Muller Presidential Professor at the University of Pennsylvania (but is currently on leave from Penn).
Until June 1, 2021, he served as Staff Physician at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center and CHERP COIN Investigator.
Dr. Patel’s research leverages concepts from behavioral economics to design connected health approaches to improve individual health behaviors. He has led several randomized, controlled trials that used wearable devices, smartphone applications, and workplace weight scales to track health behaviors. These studies evaluate interventions designed using financial and social incentives to change health behaviors. His work also evaluates how information technology-based interventions can be designed to use concepts from behavioral economics change physician behaviors to reduce low-value services and increase the delivery of high-value care.
Dr. Patel has received several national research awards including a Career Development Award from VA HSR&D, a Clinical Scientist Development Award from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, 2018 Outstanding Junior Investigator of the Year from SGIM, and the 2018 Alice Hersh New Investigator Award from AcademyHealth. Dr. Patel’s work has been published in leading medical journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine, and Health Affairs. His work has been featured in numerous media outlets including the New York Times, NBC Today Show, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Forbes, Bloomberg, Time, NPR and CNN.
