Penn researchers launch Penn Medicine Food Market Study

Goal

The Penn Medicine Food Market study tests interventions to increase the use of vouchers to purchase healthy food, including fruits and vegetables, using an online grocery delivery platform.

Description

The Penn Medicine Food Market Study is a part of the American Heart Association Health Care by Food Initiative. Eligible Penn Medicine patients will be invited to participate in the Penn Medicine Food Market Study via text message.

Once identified and enrollment is complete, participants will be randomly placed into different treatment arms. Some participants will receive free vouchers (money) to purchase fruits and vegetables on the Penn Medicine Food Market administered by Instacart. Some participants will receive free vouchers (money) to purchase fruits and vegetables on the Penn Medicine Food Market administered by Instacart. Some participants will receive reminders of how much money they have left to use for the month. All participants will receive weekly text message reminders to purchase food for the week through the online Food Market with some participants seeing the food options presented in a specific way and some receiving the usual storefront.
