Judd will talk about his new book, LUCKY BY DESIGN: The Hidden Economics You Need to Get More of What You Want, a pop-economics book on the markets that allocate some of our most valuable scarce resources — including those for medical care and donor organs — without relying exclusively on prices. For this CHIBE audience, he’ll zoom into his work on organ donation and organ allocation, discussing what he’s learned about trying to increase the supply or life-saving donor organs through behavioral interventions and allocation rules.
Judd B. Kessler is the inaugural Howard Marks Endowed Professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In 2021, Judd was awarded the prestigious Vernon L. Smith Ascending Scholar Prize. For his work on organ allocation, Judd was named one of the “30 under 30” in Law and Policy by Forbes. His research and writing have been featured in leading media, such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Harvard Business Review, NPR, Hidden Brain, and Freakonomics, among others.
He is a sought-after speaker and an award-winning teacher. His courses in Wharton’s Business Economics and Public Policy Department are popular among undergraduates, MBAs, PhD students, and executives.
He received a bachelor’s degree, MA, and PhD from Harvard University and an MPhil from the University of Cambridge.
His first book is LUCKY BY DESIGN: The Hidden Economics You Need to Get More of What You Want. It is set to be released by Little, Brown Spark on October 14, 2025.
