Abstract: Our study considers how wealth deprivation, measured as net worth poverty, relates to a diverse set of adult health measures. Net worth poverty refers to households whose wealth (assets minus debts) is less than one-fourth of the federal poverty line. Using data from Panel Study of Income Dynamics on adults observed between 2011 and 2019, results from longitudinal growth curve models indicate that net worth poverty was negatively related to outcomes, above and beyond any associations with income poverty. Adults who experienced asset poverty were particularly at risk. Wealth deprivation is an often overlooked, but most likely salient component in, the social determinants of health.
