Question: Can providing peer prescribing comparisons and patient-reported outcomes related to pain increase surgical clinician adherence to opioid prescribing guidelines?

Results: In this stepped-wedge cluster randomized clinical trial that included 143 surgical clinicians treating 20 557 patients, the proportion of guideline-adherent prescriptions increased during the intervention period from 57.2% to 71.8%, with an adjusted absolute difference of 5.3%, while patients’ reported ability to manage pain remained unchanged.
