A Penn-led randomized controlled trial found that AI-powered chatbots can make vaccine-hesitant parents more likely to consider vaccinating their children against HPV. However, the chatbots did not outperform standard written public health materials.
The findings suggest that AI tools should be evaluated against realistic alternatives. Well-designed public health materials may be just as effective—and their effects may last longer—than brief chatbot conversations.
