High-Deductible Health Plans Are Not the Answer

Penn LDI

High-deductible health plans may initially reduce health care spending by requiring patients to pay more out of pocket. However, new research suggests that they do not slow spending growth over the longer term.

The study found that annual spending increased at roughly the same rate under both high- and low-deductible plans. The researchers argue that policymakers will need to consider other approaches to controlling long-term health care spending.
