Biography
Mohammed K. Ali, MD, MSc, MBA, is the William H. Foege Distinguished Professor of Global Health, a practicing primary care physician, Vice Chair for Research in Family and Preventive Medicine, and Co-Director of the Emory Global Diabetes Research Center at Emory University. He completed his medical training at the University of Cape Town in South Africa and subsequently earned Master’s degrees in Cardiovascular Medicine and Global Health at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, and a Master of Business Administration from Emory University. He is also board-certified in family medicine. He has developed expertise in epidemiology, clinical diabetes prevention and management, implementation science, and health services research. Through his roles as co-director of the Emory Global Diabetes Research Center and the NIH-funded Georgia Center for Diabetes Translation Research, and scientific advisor for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Division of Diabetes Translation, Dr. Ali has been at the forefront of national and global efforts to study and combat diabetes. His work includes leading trials and studies regarding quality of care, integrated care models, evaluating technologies that facilitate effective care delivery, and policies that support engagement of patients and populations in high-quality health services. His research spans the US, India, Pakistan, Mexico, Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and Tanzania, and includes large cohort studies (e.g., the CARRS Cohort in South Asians), quality improvement trials (e.g. the CARRS and INDEPENDENT trials), and scale-up studies (INDIA-WORKS, I-TREC, CoCoHD) that seek to expand diabetes prevention and care to hundreds of millions globally. He was a member of the National Academy of Medicine’s Committee on Improving the Quality of Health Care Globally and has led synthesis reports for the World Health Organization (WHO) and World Bank. His work has been cited by and recognized by invited roles and committees for the WHO and CDC Foundation, as well as institutional and national awards.
