Internist and Research Scientist I at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research

Dr. Gopalan is an Internist and a Research Scientist I (equivalent to Assistant Professor) at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research. Her research focuses on the development, implementation, and dissemination of tailored interventions for patients with type 2 diabetes. Dr. Gopalan has a particular interest in patients newly diagnosed with diabetes and high-risk populations, specifically adults diagnosed with diabetes at an earlier age and race/ethnic minorities. In 2018, Dr. Gopalan received a five-year K23 Mentored Career Development Award from NIDDK to study the initial care of younger adults (age less than 45 years) with newly diagnosed diabetes. Dr. Gopalan’s research has also touched on several other domains, including the communication of complex medical information, the impact of messaging and financial incentives on health-related behaviors, and the use of health-related technologies in urban populations at risk for diabetes. She has significant experience with randomized interventions, qualitative data collection and analysis, and the analysis of both electronic health record and national survey data.

Dr. Gopalan received her undergraduate degree in biochemistry and biology from Rice University. She completed medical school at Washington University in St. Louis. She then went on to complete an internal medicine residency at the University of Pennsylvania and was a member of the program’s primary care track. Following residency, she was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania and earned a Master’s degree in Health Policy Research. She joined the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research in 2015. Find Dr. Gopalan’s CV here.
