Power Dynamics in the Doctor-Patient Relationship with Manasvini Singh, PhD, Assistant Professor of Health Economics | University of Massachusetts Amherst. 12:00p.m. – 1:00p.m. ET | September 22, 2022  |  In-Person Event Colonial Penn Center Auditorium, 3641 Locust Walk Register at: https://share.hsforms.com/1OAgUi8w7RBS3jezwG7dS2Q5gwp1 Power, broadly defined as the asymmetric control of resources, affects nearly all individual decision making. Yet there is little observational evidence on how power affects real-world behavior and resource allocation. Understanding such power dynamics is especially important in health care, where “powerful” physicians make decisions for patients in highly asymmetric information environments. To examine this question, we exploit the...

Female Labor Productivity Reduces Domestic Violence - Evidence from Peru with Isadora Frankenthal | PhD Candidate, MIT HYBRID SEMINAR In Person: 1104 Blockley Hall, 423 Guardian Drive | Virtual: Attendees may attend via Zoom (https://upenn.zoom.us/j/95353951407) Abstract: This study investigates the impact of female employment and earnings on domestic violence in Peru. I construct exogenous shifters of gender-specific labor productivity by exploiting gender-specific comparative advantage in the production of major export crops, along with time variation in international crop prices and cross-sectional variation in crop composition across districts. Female labor productivity reduces domestic violence, including severe physical violence and female homicide,...

Leapfrogging for Last-mile Delivery in Health Care with Hummy Song, PhD | Assistant Professor of Operations, Information and Decisions, The Wharton School HYBRID SEMINAR In Person: 1104 Blockley Hall, 423 Guardian Drive | Virtual: Attendees may attend via Zoom (https://upenn.zoom.us/j/95353951407) Radical technological innovations may allow leapfrogging over traditional solutions to improve access to quality medical care, especially in hard-to-reach areas. Using data from Rwandan public hospitals, we examine the impact of using drones for the delivery of blood products on inventory management and health outcomes. We find that adopting drone delivery leads to a 62% reduction in on-hand inventory of...

"Systemic Discrimination: Theory and Measurement" with Aislinn Bohren, PhD | Associate Professor of Economics, University of Pennsylvania Hybrid Event In Person: 1104 Blockley Hall, 423 Guardian Drive | Virtual: Attendees may attend via Zoom (https://upenn.zoom.us/j/95353951407 Abstract: Economics tends to define and measure discrimination as disparities stemming from the direct  effects of protected group membership. But work in other fields notes that such measures are incomplete, as they can miss important systemic (indirect) channels. For example, racial disparities in criminal records due to discrimination in policing can lead to disparate outcomes for equally-qualified job applicants despite a race-neutral hiring rule. We develop...

“The Role of Neighborhood Characteristics in Pregnancy and Birth Outcomes” with Eliza Kinsey, PhD, Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health, University of Pennsylvania Abstract: The neighborhood in which a person lives can have dramatic impacts on their health and wellbeing. However, limited research has been done exploring how neighborhood characteristics affect perinatal health for both the pregnant individual and the infant. This talk will cover geospatial methods for neighborhood analysis in health research and present findings using New York City Vital Statistics birth records data to evaluate the associations between neighborhood characteristics (food environment, walkability and poverty rate)...

“Genetics and Economic Success”  with Leandro Carvalho, PhD | Economist at the Center for Economic and Social Research (CESR) and Assistant (Research) Professor of Economics, University of Southern California Abstract: Does genetics influence one’s chances of economic success? I exploit randomness in the genetic transmission from parents to offspring to estimate causal genetic effects. I investigate how the causal relationship between genetics and income emerges.   “Net Worth Poverty and Adult Health” with Christina Gibson-Davis, PhD, Professor of Public Policy, Duke University Abstract: Our study considers how wealth deprivation, measured as net worth poverty, relates to a diverse set of adult health measures. Net worth poverty refers to households whose wealth (assets minus debts) is less than one-fourth of the federal poverty line. Using data from Panel Study of Income Dynamics on adults observed between 2011 and 2019, results from longitudinal growth curve models indicate that net worth poverty was negatively related to outcomes, above and beyond any associations with income poverty. Adults who experienced...

East, PhD, Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Colorado Denver 12:00p.m. – 1:00p.m. ET | March 9, 2023  |  In-Person Event Steinberg-Dietrich Hall, Room 1203, 3620 Locust Walk, Philadelphia, PA Register here: https://share.hsforms.com/17BSzT1wFTU29AkwTovEVLg5gwp1  Abstract: The Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) reached 38 million people in 2019. However, an estimated 18% of eligible households do not participate. We study a potentially important channel driving incomplete participation—the behavior of caseworkers. Caseworkers play a key role in the application process; they are the main resource for applicants, and they...
