"Systemic Discrimination: Theory and Measurement" with Aislinn Bohren, PhD | Associate Professor of Economics, University of Pennsylvania Hybrid Event In Person: 1104 Blockley Hall, 423 Guardian Drive | Virtual: Attendees may attend via Zoom (https://upenn.zoom.us/j/95353951407 Abstract: Economics tends to define and measure discrimination as disparities stemming from the direct  effects of protected group membership. But work in other fields notes that such measures are incomplete, as they can miss important systemic (indirect) channels. For example, racial disparities in criminal records due to discrimination in policing can lead to disparate outcomes for equally-qualified job applicants despite a race-neutral hiring rule. We develop...

“The Role of Neighborhood Characteristics in Pregnancy and Birth Outcomes” with Eliza Kinsey, PhD, Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health, University of Pennsylvania Abstract: The neighborhood in which a person lives can have dramatic impacts on their health and wellbeing. However, limited research has been done exploring how neighborhood characteristics affect perinatal health for both the pregnant individual and the infant. This talk will cover geospatial methods for neighborhood analysis in health research and present findings using New York City Vital Statistics birth records data to evaluate the associations between neighborhood characteristics (food environment, walkability and poverty rate)...

“Genetics and Economic Success”  with Leandro Carvalho, PhD | Economist at the Center for Economic and Social Research (CESR) and Assistant (Research) Professor of Economics, University of Southern California Abstract: Does genetics influence one’s chances of economic success? I exploit randomness in the genetic transmission from parents to offspring to estimate causal genetic effects. I investigate how the causal relationship between genetics and income emerges.   “Net Worth Poverty and Adult Health” with Christina Gibson-Davis, PhD, Professor of Public Policy, Duke University Abstract: Our study considers how wealth deprivation, measured as net worth poverty, relates to a diverse set of adult health measures. Net worth poverty refers to households whose wealth (assets minus debts) is less than one-fourth of the federal poverty line. Using data from Panel Study of Income Dynamics on adults observed between 2011 and 2019, results from longitudinal growth curve models indicate that net worth poverty was negatively related to outcomes, above and beyond any associations with income poverty. Adults who experienced...

However, an estimated 18% of eligible households do not participate. We study a potentially important channel driving incomplete participation—the behavior of caseworkers. Caseworkers play a key role in the application process; they are the main resource for applicants, and they...

"Food policies for healthier diets: lessons from around the globe" with Lindsey Smith Taillie, PhD, Associate Professor of Nutrition, Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill Policy is a powerful tool to promote healthier diets because of its ability to impact entire food systems and populations. Other countries, particularly in Latin America, have been very progressive in implementing an array of policies, including ultraprocessed foods and sugary drinks taxes, front-of-package warning labels, and restrictions on marketing to children, and school feeding programs. This talk will summarize the current state of the evidence, where the...

Included-variable bias and everything but the kitchen sink with Sharad Goel, PhD, Professor of Public Policy, Harvard Kennedy School When estimating the risk of an adverse outcome, common statistical guidance is to include all available factors to maximize predictive performance. Similarly, in observational studies of discrimination, general practice is to adjust for all potential confounds to isolate any impermissible effect of legally protected traits, like race or gender, on decisions. I’ll argue that this popular "kitchen-sink” approach can in fact worsen predictions in the first case and yield conservative estimates of discrimination in the second. Sharad Goel is a...
