“Economic Aspects of Improving Oral Health Care in Nursing Homes: Results from a Cluster Randomized Trial”
Abstract: This study provides an economic evaluation of a cluster randomized trial in 14 nursing homes of an educational intervention to improve oral health care. The intervention reduced pneumonia cases during the first year of the trial, when fidelity to the intervention was highest. The analysis estimated incremental cost effectiveness ratios using bootstrapping of resident-level observations, with preliminary results showing a 58% to 87% chance of the intervention being cost-saving due to reduced hospitalization for pneumonia. Work is continuing on the best way to conduct economic evaluation in trials where the number of facilities sampled is relatively small.
