CHIBE-affiliated faculty member Shivan Mehta, MD, MBA, MSHP, appeared on JAMA Network Open Live (#JNOlive) to discuss his new study: “Effect of Sequential or Active Choice for Colorectal Cancer Screening Outreach: A Randomized Clinical Trial.”

Dr. Mehta spoke with JAMA Network Open’s Digital Media Editor Seth Trueger, MD, MPH, as well as Fishbein Fellow Angel N. Desai, MD, about the study, which investigated ways to increase colorectal cancer screening rates. The team looked at response rates for offering colonoscopy only compared with sequential choice (colonoscopy and then fecal immunochemical testing) or active choice (colonoscopy or fecal immunochemical testing) through mailed outreach. They found that there was no significant increase in screening when offering the sequential or active choice options, but there was a lower rate of colonoscopy in the choice arms than in the colonoscopy-only arm.
